The TE-HVPLUSX is a high volume air sampler configured for 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix B compliant Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) sampling. This method provides a measurement of the mass concentration of total suspended particulate matter (TSP) in ambient air for determining compliance with the primary and secondary national ambient air quality standards for particulate matter. Designed for collecting particulate matter with no size-selective inlet, this sampler captures particles with aerodynamic diameters of approximately 100 µm or less.
MFC PLUS Flow Control Technology
The system utilizes Tisch Environmental's advanced MFC PLUS controller with microprocessor-based technology for superior flow control accuracy. It utilizes a microprocessor based controller for instantaneous and accurate flow control. The system's built in temperature and barometric pressure sensors along with the microprocessor-based mass flow controller allow the system to accurately calculate the flow rate. This ensures compliance with the EPA requirement for sampling 40-60 cubic feet per minute (ft³/min) of air with the sampling rate held constant over the sampling period.
Key Specifications
- Power Configuration: 220V, 50Hz with brush-style motor
- Flow Rate: 39-60 ft³/min constant flow rate
- Sampling Period: 1,440 ±60 minutes for a valid sample
- Controller: MFC PLUS with built-in ambient temperature and barometric pressure sensors
- Timer: Digital timer with battery backup
Data Logging and Control Features
The PLUS technology flow controllers include a built in digital timer with internal battery backup, multiple elapsed time indicators, and four data logs with an external USB drive for data retrieval. The system captures and stores average, minimum, and maximum ambient temperature and barometric pressure data, along with total ambient and standard flow measurements for comprehensive sample documentation.
Lead Monitoring Applications
This sampler is specifically configured for lead monitoring programs where measurement of airborne Pb continues to be performed by Hi-Vol TSP samplers in accordance with 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix B. Pb-TSP is collected for 24 hours on a TSP filter as described in Appendix B of part 50, the Reference Method for the Determination of Suspended Particulate Matter in the Atmosphere (High-Volume Method). Following collection, samples can be analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods for lead content determination.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
The system meets all requirements specified in 40 CFR 50, appendix B for TSP reference method sampling. The total volume of air sampled, corrected to EPA standard conditions (25 °C, 760 mm Hg [101 kPa]), is determined from the measured flow rate and the sampling time. The concentration of total suspended particulate matter in the ambient air is computed as the mass of collected particles divided by the volume of air sampled, corrected to standard conditions, and is expressed in micrograms per standard cubic meter (µg/std m³).
Ideal for ambient air monitoring networks, research applications, and regulatory compliance programs requiring accurate TSP measurements with comprehensive data logging capabilities. The 220V, 50Hz configuration makes this system suitable for international deployment and regions with 50Hz power systems.
