2 inch Long Polyurethane Foam Vapor Collection Substrate, 10/pk
The TE-1011 polyurethane foam (PUF) vapor collection substrate serves as the vapor-phase collection medium for high-volume air samplers used in EPA-compliant ambient air monitoring. These substrates are typically used to collect volatile organic compounds and airborne pesticides in systems designed to meet EPA method TO-4A, TO-9A, and TO-13A requirements. Each 2-inch long cylindrical foam piece captures semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) as air passes through the dual-chamber sampling system.
Technical Operation
PUF substrates function as efficient sorbent media for semi-volatile organic compounds with moderate to low vapor pressures. The foam's porous structure provides effective collection across a wide range of compounds while remaining cheap, easy to handle, and efficient. The vapor elements are captured onto the polyurethane foam positioned in the lower chamber of the dual sampling module, while particulates are collected on filter media in the upper chamber.

Compatibility
The TE-1011 foam substrates are designed for use in Tisch Environmental PUF (polyurethane foam) high-volume air samplers and other EPA-compliant sampling systems. Compatible samplers operate between 125-250 lpm and use either manual motor speed controllers or PLUS flow controllers. These substrates fit standard glass cartridges housed in the lower chamber of dual-module PUF sampling heads.
Sample Preparation and Maintenance
Prior to use, PUF substrates require thorough cleaning to achieve low background contamination levels. Standard preparation involves Soxhlet extraction using dichloromethane, drying in a vacuum desiccator, and storage in multiple layers of aluminum foil. Alternative cleaning protocols include washing with distilled water, followed by 24-hour Soxhlet extractions with acetone and hexane, then drying in a vacuum desiccator.
After field sampling, collected substrates undergo solvent extraction and analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify and quantify captured organic compounds. Proper handling and storage maintain sample integrity throughout the analytical process.
Applications
These PUF substrates support compliance monitoring for EPA methods TO-4A, TO-9A, and TO-13A for determination of toxic organic compounds in ambient air. Applications include collection of volatile organic compounds, airborne pesticides, PFAS, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, furans, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air monitoring programs.
