3" x 3-3/8" Polyurethane Foam Substrate for EPA Sampling Methods, 10/pk
The TE-1123-4 polyurethane foam collection substrate is designed for the collection of semi-volatile organic compounds in ambient air monitoring applications. This precision-cut foam substrate measures 3 inches in diameter by 3-3/8 inches in height and serves as the critical sampling medium in high volume polyurethane foam (PUF) air sampling systems.
Technical Application
The procedure is based on the adsorption of chemicals from ambient air on polyurethane foam (PUF) using a high volume sampler. The foam's open-cell structure provides optimal surface area for capturing vapor-phase contaminants while allowing consistent airflow through the sampling system. This sampler operates between 125-250 lpm and effectively traps semi-volatile organic compounds that pass through the upper particulate filter.
EPA Method Compliance
The TE-1123-4 substrates are compatible with multiple EPA compendium methods:
- EPA Method TO-4A - Determination of pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ambient air
- EPA Method TO-9A - Determination of dioxins and furans
- EPA Method TO-13A - Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
System Compatibility
These foam substrates are specifically sized for use in Tisch Environmental PUF sampling systems, including:
- TE-1000 PUF high volume air samplers
- TE-1000 PUF PLUS systems with microprocessor-based flow control
- Systems utilizing glass cartridge assemblies for vapor collection
The system incorporates a dual sampling module to collect volatile organic compounds, airborne pesticides, and PFAS in ambient air. The foam substrate is housed in the lower chamber's glass cartridge while particulate matter is collected on filters in the upper chamber.
Sample Handling and Analysis
Each foam substrate is individually wrapped to maintain cleanliness prior to field deployment. The collected samples can be analyzed using a variety of analytical techniques, including gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, to determine the concentration and identity of the contaminants present in the sampled air. Post-sampling, substrates are carefully removed from the glass cartridge and shipped to analytical laboratories following established chain-of-custody procedures.
Applications
The PUF high volume air sampler collects airborne particulate and vapor contaminants. These samplers are typically used to collect volatile organic compounds and airborne pesticides. Typical monitoring applications include:
- Ambient air quality assessment for regulatory compliance
- Source emission characterization and fence-line monitoring
- Environmental forensics and contamination assessment
- Research studies on atmospheric transport of persistent organic pollutants
