The TE-1123-6 is a 3-inch thick sheet stock polyurethane foam substrate with density 0.022 g/cm³, designed specifically for EPA-compliant air sampling applications. This polyether-type foam meets EPA specifications for collection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other semivolatile organic compounds.

    EPA Method Compliance

This polyurethane foam substrate meets specifications for EPA Compendium Method TO-13A for the determination of toxic organics in ambient air. It also complies with EPA methods TO-4A and TO-9A, providing laboratories with the reliable collection medium needed for accurate environmental monitoring.

    Specifications

    • Dimensions: 3 inches x 3 inches x 3 inches thick
    • Density: 0.022 g/cm³
    • Material: Polyether-type polyurethane foam suitable for furniture upholstery applications
    • Package quantity: 10 foam substrates per package
    • Pre-cleaned for low background contamination

    Applications

This foam substrate is used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by utilizing polyurethane foam (PUF) as the sorbent followed by GC/MS analysis. Polyurethane foam is used worldwide for active and passive sampling of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in air due to its low cost, ease of handling, and efficiency for collecting a wide range of compounds with moderate to low vapor pressures.

    Compatibility

The PUF cylinders (plugs) should be slightly larger in diameter than the internal diameter of the cartridge and are compatible with high-volume samplers from Tisch Environmental and other EPA-approved sampling equipment. This substrate works with PUF sampling cartridges designed for EPA TO-13A sampling protocols.

    Sampling Protocol

For TO-13A applications, ambient air is drawn through a glass fiber filter and the polyurethane foam (PUF) cartridge by means of a high volume sampler. The filter and PUF cartridge are extracted using 10% diethyl ether. The methodology suggests the use of high volume (0.22 m³/min) sampling technique to acquire sufficient sample for analysis.

    Laboratory Analysis

The extract is concentrated using Kuderna-Danish technique, diluted, and cleaned up using column chromatography. The cleaned extract is then analyzed by GC/MS to identify and quantify target analytes including PAHs and other toxic organic compounds in ambient air samples.
