WINS Oil for PM2.5 Inlet, 5 oz Bottle - Low Volatility Diffusion Oil

Low volatility diffusion oil specifically formulated for use in EPA PM2.5 Well Impactor Ninety-Six (WINS) particle size separators. This specialized oil creates the impaction substrate necessary for trapping airborne particles down to 2.5 microns in size on an oil-infused glass fiber filter substrate, while allowing smaller PM2.5 particles to pass through for collection and measurement.

    Technical Operation

Particles greater than 2.5 µm aerodynamic diameter have sufficient inertia to be impacted upon a circular 37 mm diameter glass fiber filter immersed in 1 mL of this low volatility oil. The relatively large amount of oil minimizes substrate overloading and subsequent particle bounce experienced by conventional impactors. The oil's low vapor pressure ensures consistent performance during extended sampling periods.

    Key Specifications

    • Container size: 5 oz bottle
    • Application volume: 1 mL per WINS impactor well
    • Formulation: Mixed phenylmethyl dimethyl cyclosiloxane (Tetramethyl tetraphenyl trisiloxane)
    • Operating flow rate: 16.7 L/min downstream of PM10 inlet
    • Excellent heat, oxidation and radiation resistance

    Compatibility

This oil is designed for use with EPA-compliant WINS impactor assemblies operating in PM2.5 sampling systems. Compatible with 37mm diameter binderless glass fiber filter substrates used as the impaction surface. The WINS impactor serves as the classic EPA specified PM2.5 particle size separator in Federal Reference Method sampling.

    Application Instructions

Apply oil to prepared glass fiber filter substrate in WINS impactor well. Place 42 to 44 drops of impactor oil onto the filter for proper operation. The novel geometry of the impaction reservoir captures any reentrained material from the impaction surface and prevents loss of oil should the unit be inadvertently turned over.

    Maintenance Schedule

WINS impactor wells need replacement every 3 to 5 sampling days to avoid particle overloading which affects the cutoff diameter and sampling accuracy. Regular oil replacement ensures maintained 50 percent cutpoint diameter of 2.48 µm with geometric standard deviation of 1.18 per EPA specifications.

    Regulatory Compliance

Formulated for use in 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L PM2.5 Federal Reference Method sampling. Supports NAAQS compliance monitoring for fine particulate matter in ambient air quality programs.
