    The TE-10557PM10 Volumetric Flow Controller (VFC) delivers precise flow control for PM10 high volume air samplers designed according to 40 CFR appendix J to part 50 and designated as a federal reference method sampler. This complete VFC assembly includes the critical orifice and flow look-up table, providing reliable volumetric flow control for brush-style motor systems operating at 110 volts.

    How Volumetric Flow Control Works

    Volumetric flow controlled (VFC) PM10 particulate samplers use a critical orifice with a predetermined orifice hole diameter to control the flow rate. The critical orifice is drilled and calibrated to let only the predetermined flow rate pass through the filter. The volumetric flow controller (VFC) uses a vacuum motor that operates at maximum speed. The vacuum motor draws air through a fixed area in the VFC, and a critical flow is established through the PM10 sampling head at 40 CFM. The critical orifice provides essentially constant volumetric flow rate independent of ambient pressure changes and only varies slightly with the square root of ambient temperature.

    Calibration and Maintenance

    The PM10 VFC Sampler is calibrated using an orifice transfer standard that has been standardized against a primary standard. The included flow look-up table provides the calibration data necessary for accurate flow calculations. Each PM10 VFC Sampler when properly configured is a United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Designated Reference Method.

    EPA Compliance

    This VFC system ensures compliance with 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix J for PM10 reference method sampling. A volumetric flow control system maintains a constant volumetric flow rate (given a fixed temperature) through the PM10 inlet. A choked-flow venturi is operated such that the air attains sonic velocity in the throat of the device, ensuring accurate particle size fractionation and reliable ambient air monitoring data.
