    VFC for PM2.5 Hi-Vol Air Sampler, 110V Brush Style Systems

    The TE-10557PM2.5 volumetric flow controller (VFC) provides precise flow rate control for PM2.5 high volume air samplers operating with 110 volt brush style blower motor systems. This critical orifice-based system maintains a constant volumetric flow rate through the PM2.5 inlet by using a predetermined orifice hole diameter that is drilled and calibrated to allow only the predetermined flow rate to pass through the filter.

    How VFC Technology Works

    The volumetric flow controlled system uses a critical orifice with a predetermined orifice hole diameter to control the flow rate. The critical orifice is drilled and calibrated to let only the predetermined flow rate to pass through the filter. The motor on these systems operates wide open while the critical orifice maintains a constant flow rate. The critical orifice is calibrated in a NIST traceable lab to determine the volumetric flow rate.

    PM2.5 Application

    The Tisch Environmental PM2.5 high volume air sampler is a non-Federal Reference Method sampler for the collection of particulate matter that is 2.5µm or less. Its primary uses is for non regulatory sampling and institutional studies. This VFC controller supports ambient air monitoring applications for fine particulate matter research, source assessment, and enclosed environment monitoring where PM2.5 concentrations need to be accurately measured.

    Installation and Operation

    The VFC controller integrates into PM2.5 sampler systems where the PM2.5 high volume air sampler collects particulates at a flow rate of 40 cfm through a PM2.5 size selective inlet. As the particulates travel through the size selective inlet the larger particulates are trapped inside of the inlet as the smaller PM2.5 particulates continue to travel through the PM2.5 inlet and are collected on the 8" x 10" quartz filter paper. The VFC design provides consistent sampling performance throughout the sampling period by maintaining constant volumetric flow regardless of filter loading conditions.
