High Volume PUF Sampler for Toxic Organic Compound Collection
The TE-1000XZ is a high volume air sampler that collects airborne particulate and vapor contaminants using polyurethane foam (PUF) media. These samplers are typically used to collect volatile organic compounds and airborne pesticides for ambient air quality monitoring and environmental assessment.
Dual Collection System
The sampler incorporates a dual sampling module design that captures both particulate matter and gas-phase contaminants. The system incorporates a dual sampling module to collect airborne particulates onto the filter paper media and the vapor elements onto a piece of polyurethane foam in the lower chamber of the sampling module. This design enables comprehensive collection of semi-volatile organic compounds that exist in both phases.
EPA Method Compliance
The TE-1000XZ meets requirements for EPA methods TO-4A, TO-9A, and TO-13A for ambient air sampling. EPA Method TO-13A specifically addresses determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air using gas chromatographic/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), while TO-4A and TO-9A cover pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and other toxic organics.
Key Specifications
- Power: 220V, 60Hz configuration
- Motor Type: Brush style motor using carbon motor brushes to conduct current within the electric motor
- Timer: 7-day mechanical timer recognized by its bright yellow timer dial, using a series of on/off trippers to set the sampling schedule
- Flow Rate: 125-250 lpm operating range
- Housing: Anodized aluminum shelter that houses the timer, magnehelic gauge, vacuum motor, elapsed time indicator, flow venturi, and dual sampling module
Operation and Control
Standard PUF air samplers use a manual motor speed adjustment device to control the motor speed. The system includes a magnehelic gauge that records the pressure drop through the critical orifice, with this value used to calculate the ambient or standard flow rate. The venturi is a critical orifice used to control the amount of flow through the sample media, with barbed hose fittings to record the differential pressure as it passes through the orifice.
Motor Maintenance
The brush-style motor provides proven field reliability but requires periodic maintenance. Brush motors are low cost but require routine motor brush changes. Regular inspection and replacement of carbon brushes ensures consistent performance and extends motor life.
Applications
This configuration is ideal for:
- Ambient air monitoring for toxic organics compliance
- Environmental impact assessments
- Industrial hygiene monitoring
- Research studies requiring EPA-compliant sampling methods
- Long-term monitoring programs with scheduled sampling protocols
