The TE-5170DBLX is a complete high volume air sampler designed for Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) collection in compliance with 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix B. This method provides a measurement of the mass concentration of total suspended particulate matter (TSP) in ambient air for determining compliance with the primary and secondary national ambient air quality standards for particulate matter.
Technical Operation
The sampler operates with a Mass Flow Controller (MFC) that maintains constant volumetric flow rate by automatically adjusting motor speed based on real-time flow feedback. Greater air volume measurement accuracy may be achieved by equipping the sampler with a flow controlling mechanism that maintains constant air flow during the sampling period. The brushless motor design eliminates carbon brush replacement and reduces maintenance requirements for continuous field deployment.
Key Specifications
- Power: 220V, 50Hz configuration for international applications
- Timer: Digital programming with precise sampling period control
- Motor: Brushless design for extended service life
- Controller: MFC (Mass Flow Control) maintains set flow rate
- Housing: Anodized aluminum shelter protects components from weather
Sampling Protocol
An air sampler, properly located at the measurement site, draws a measured quantity of ambient air into a covered housing and through a filter during a 24-hr (nominal) sampling period. The sample period must be 1,440 ±60 min. The sampler flow rate and the geometry of the shelter favor the collection of particles up to 25-50 µm (aerodynamic diameter), depending on wind speed and direction.
System Compatibility
This configuration uses the same sampling methodology as other TE-5170 series samplers but with specific power and control options. Compatible with standard TSP filter media and follows EPA reference method procedures for filter handling and gravimetric analysis. The filter is weighed (after moisture equilibration) before and after use to determine the net weight (mass) gain. The concentration of total suspended particulate matter in the ambient air is computed as the mass of collected particles divided by the volume of air sampled, corrected to standard conditions, and is expressed in micrograms per standard cubic meter (µg/std m³).
Applications
Designed for ambient air quality monitoring networks, environmental compliance monitoring, and research applications requiring EPA-compliant TSP data collection. The 220V 50Hz power configuration makes this unit suitable for international monitoring programs and locations with European/Asian electrical standards.
