Hi-Vol TSP Sampler - MFC, Mechanical Timer, Brushless Motor, 220V 60Hz
The TE-5170BLXZ is a high volume air sampler configured for EPA-compliant total suspended particulate (TSP) sampling according to 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix B. This method provides measurement of mass concentration of total suspended particulate matter in ambient air for determining compliance with national ambient air quality standards.
Mass Flow Control Technology
The MFC (Mass Flow Control) system maintains a constant volumetric flow rate by automatically adjusting motor speed based on real-time flow feedback from a hot wire anemometer probe. As the filter loads with particulate matter during the sampling period, the system compensates for increasing backpressure to maintain the target flow rate within the required 39-60 ft³/min range specified in the EPA reference method. This active flow control helps ensure consistent sample collection conditions throughout the entire 24-hour sampling period.
Key Specifications
- Power: 220V, 60Hz configuration
- Motor: Brushless design for extended service life
- Timer: 7-day mechanical timer with elapsed time indicator
- Flow rate: 1.1-1.7 m³/min (39-60 ft³/min)
- Filter size: 8″ × 10″ (20.3 cm × 25.4 cm)
Brushless Motor Advantages
The brushless motor eliminates the need for routine brush replacement, reducing field maintenance requirements and supporting continuous operation in remote monitoring locations. Unlike brush-style motors that require periodic brush changes every 1,000-2,000 hours of operation, the brushless design provides consistent performance with minimal maintenance intervention.
System Configuration
Housed in an anodized aluminum shelter with gabled roof design, the sampler features a four-sided inlet configuration that allows ambient air to enter from all directions. The mechanical timer provides dependable start/stop control with elapsed time indication for tracking sampling periods and motor operating hours. A chart recorder monitors motor backpressure throughout the sampling period, providing a permanent record of system performance.
Applications
Designed for ambient air quality monitoring programs requiring TSP measurements for regulatory compliance, including state and local air quality networks, industrial boundary monitoring, and research applications. TSP concentration is computed as the mass of collected particles divided by the volume of air sampled, corrected to EPA standard conditions, and expressed in micrograms per standard cubic meter.
